How would you describe the changes of mood in Scene 5?

At first everyone’s kind of apprehensive since even though it’s Hanukkah, they still have to be quiet. Later on, however, the mood changes and they all become happy when Ane brings them the presents that she prepared herself. The mood becomes more celebration-like, and everyone’s more relaxed. Later on however the mood changes to tense when Mr Van Daan gets mad at Peter, and they become nervous and extremely still and quiet as they hear a noise. The mood changes very quickly in this scene which shows how easy they are to become discouraged or happy. The tension rises and drops a lot as well. Although they’re started to get annoyed at each other, they still know the important of working together and appreciating the celebration.

At the end of the scene, Anne describes the first thing each of the people would like to do after getting out of the hiding place. If you were free after many months of hiding, what would be the first thing you would like to do?

If it were me, if I’d just come out of the house I’d taking a humongous breath of fresh air and would be just runnning and jumping around, ecstatic to finally be let out! I’d probably notice the things I hadn’t noticed or appreciated before, like the sweet smell of flowers or the fresh scent of grass, and stand there with a big smile for a few seconds feeling the warm rays of sunshine sinking into my skin. I’d also definetly want to eat all kinds of foods I wasn’t able to in hiding like ice cream, chocolate, cupcakes or some other thing that’d be considered a “luxury” at that time because of the food shortage. I’d try eating a lot of new things and different kinds of foods too. I’d also do the things I wasn’t able to inside since I’d need the excercise, like swimming in the pool, playing other sports with my family and/or friends until I was too tired to and had to give in, I’d just be really happy and energetic. I probably wouldn’t be able to sit still that first day. I mean after months of being trapped inside a tiny space I’d finally be let out! I’d also definetly want to meet with all my friends and go to a movie or shopping or something that I missed doing. I would notice everything in a new way, and probably would have a new attitude for everything. I would probably appreciate a lot more of the things that I hadn’t really noticed before. I would definetly learn a new perspective and see things in a different way.

After finishing reading the 3rd scene of the book, I did this question:

Compare and contrast the characters of Anne and Peter.

Anne and Peter are completely different characters, there are definetly more differences than comparisons between them. Anne is loud, outgoing, shows her feelings, dramatic, friendly, talkative, at times childish, while Peter is quiet, shy, more mature, not really talkative and doesn’t really show his emotions. Anne loves attention while Peter tends to shrink away from it and not cause a fuss. Another difference is that Anne is brave and just goes up to people and says what she wants, while Peter’s more careful with what he says and does. He isn’t very bold either.The best comparison that I can think of is their situation, since both are in hiding just because of their religion. They also both like cats.  At first they annoy each other very much and tease each other a lot, but later on they get to be better friends.

What are your initial impressions of Anne?

My first impression of Anne is of a bright and energetic girl who loves talking and getting attention. In the book she seems like the type of person who can never sit still. She’s also very bright and positive. Her house was taken away from her, she wouldn’t be able to meet her friends and they would be staying in the hiding place for an uknown length of time, and she still manages to keep a bright attitude! Although to the adults she seems just to be a loud, annoying, maybe even bratty typical teenager, I think she’s very important to the house since she’s able to keep it from getting gloomy. She’s actually able to find fun in the situation and make it sound kind of like an adventure. Even though she gets in trouble a lot from her parents and with adults, she’s an important character in the household to keep everyone together.  

There are some types of poetry that I like, for example rhyming poems, alliteration (I don’t know why, I like the simpleness of it I guess) that kind of stuff. I like short poems that are easy to understand and that you don’t have to wonder all day about what the writer was actually trying to say, since it’s already there. However, if the poet is a great writer, then the poem will be that much better and easier to image.

Overall, I think that poetry is an interesting way for people to express their feelings and that it’s amazing what some people can do just by extending their thoughts and writing about them. Also, how much they can write about a single topic!

1. I think that merry-making is important in society because if there wasn’t any, everyone would be really full of stress and unrelaxed. Also, without it how could people have fun? THere’d be no laughing, jokes, or having fun in general! What a boring life. I think that if there wasn’t any merry-making in our lives, everyday would be very dull. It’s important especially during when your a kid since that’s the time when you can just relax, have fun, and enjoy your life! IT’s also important most of all when your with your friends, since that’s the main time to merry-make and have fun! If there was no mery-making at all for kids, it’d be very hard for people to get to know each others personalities since everyone would act the same way. When you get to be an adult I think that it gets harder since there’s more things that you need to worry about. But adults DO of course also have to have fun sometime or else they would be serious all the time. If adults didn’t have merry-making in their life, that would not only affect the people around them, but themselves most of all. There’d be no breaks and no time to relax!   

2. I learned a lot about Shakespeare language, and how to translate it into modern English. I also learned about how certain phrases/words can be shown and expressed in different movements. I learned how to work better in different groups as well. Also, I learned that Shakespeares work actually was pretty interesting and fun to read and act out.

Researchers in the United Kingdom found that test subjects who doodled while listening to a recorded message had a 29 percent better recall of the message’s details than those who didn’t doodle. The findings were published in Applied Cognitive Psychology.

“If someone is doing a boring task, like listening to a dull telephone conversation, they may start to daydream,” study researcher Professor Jackie Andrade, of the School of Psychology at the University of Plymouth, said in a news release issued by the journal’s publisher. “Daydreaming distracts them from the task, resulting in poorer performance. A simple task, like doodling, may be sufficient to stop daydreaming without affecting performance on the main task.”

For the experiment, a two-and-a-half minute listing of several people’s names and places was played for test subjects, who were charged with writing down only the names of the people said to be attending a party. During the recording, half the participants were asked to simultaneously shade in shapes on a piece of paper without attention to neatness. Participants were not told they were taking part in a memory test.

I thought this was very interesting as I always start to daydream when I’m listening to something boring, so this would help me a lot

• How would you get each character off the stage in 5.1? Think about where they are going and how they feel. Do they stop and shake hands with other characters? Do they slink off or run off? This will be the last time the audience sees them. What impressions do you want to leave?

I would set it in somewhere like maybe a castle in.. Scotland! I don’t know why, but the castle and etc kind of remind me of Scotland (even though I’ve never been to there). I am not sure why, but if fits my image of Illyria well. Also, the whole time the light should be focused on or following the main character of the scene; especially in a scene where for example Feste sings his song, the attention should be focused on him. I’d also have special sound afects to make some scenes more interesting and entertaining to watch. This is what I’d do for each character:

Viola- Quite humble clothes since she’s dressed up as Cesario, Orsino’s servant. So no special accesories or anything; maybe a hat though.  

Sebastian- Should have some resemblance with Viola. Normal, simple clothes.

Orsino- extremely puffy sleeves! A feather boa maybe. He could have several frills in his clothes too (since at that time it was probably popular). He would have a kind of shallow, conceited sort of attitude but not meaning to be like that.  

Olivia- A long, flowing, expensive-looking Shakespeare-style dress.

Feste- Since he’s Olivia’s servant he should be wearing something decent, but there should be something not proper or silly about him. He’s kind of the ‘not-so-foolish-fool’ so maybe a striped suit with different colored flowers in his front pocket (like the one’s that magicians use), and a colorful bow or tie. He could also be wearing a hat, like a joker’s hat or something. 

Sir Toby- Should be wearing a suit jacket with shorts of something. He should also be holding a beer bottle.

Sir Andrew-Someone tall should act as him. Wearing yellow,Olivia’s least fave color, since he’s supposed to be foolish

Maria- A dress with maybe an apron, or something to show that she’s a servant so that people won’t mistake her for Olivia.

When the characters leave the stage, they should leave an impression.

I think that Feste should leave the stage with the same kind of impression, except as a fool who is not foolish; therefore still the same silly kind of impression but more like a silly person who is good with words and actually turns out not to be as foolish as was thought. Some of the main characters, such as Orsino, should leave a slightly different impression; in Orsino’s case, he should leave the stage as someone with a deeper understanding of what love is and etc. Olivia as well, in a similiar way. Viola should exit basically the same, since she’s kind of the ‘wise’ one.

I also think that when Feste leaves — since it’s the ending and should also leave an impression – he should sing as he does in the script then clap twice and the lights should turn off, or the curtains should close.

When Antonio’s saying this he thinks that he’s speaking to Sebastian, but he’s really talking to Viola who obviously gets really surprised that a stranger is talking to her as a friend. I think what he’s saying is how he thinks that Sebastian turned out to be a man of a fake image, and untrue words since he doesn’t notice that he’s really talking to Viola who is Sebastians twin sister.

Some examples I can give of them are:

‘Are empty trunks, o’er-flourished by the devil’ (3.4.321) I have read and heard about the comparison between beautiful people and empty things. Also the phrase ‘But O how vile an idol proves this god!’ (3.4.316); although this was not true in this context since Antonio was really speaking to Viola (as Cesario), in books and etc it often happens where someone who everyone thought was the good guy, or that was going to be the hero, actually wasn’t and turned out to be the villain. And etc.
